Silicone Bakeware: To Bake or Not to Bake

Silicone Bakeware: To Bake or Not to Bake

Recently, silicone bakeware has been in the lime light with top chefs and info commercials. But why are they all of a sudden so popular? I will discuss what silicone is and through research and personal experiences, I will briefly discuss what I feel all the hype is on these silicone products.

First, what is silicone? Silicone is a heat-resistant silicon-based synthetic substance in the form of a grease, oil, or plastic. It was created by a chemist Frederick Kipping. Silicone is used for many things including aquarium joints, toys, electronics, and lubricants. It is also used in building to stop the spread of fire to save lives. The automotive, medical, and cooking industries have found numerous uses for this product as well.

What are the advantages of Silicone? It has many uses and advantages as stated in the previous paragraph. These pans are made out of a special silicone material that has met the approval of the FDA and should be found on the packaging label. This bakeware comes in various colors. This slick material does require you to use oil or a cooking spray when baking to prevent sticking. When your silicone bakeware is done in the oven you will see that your baked item is evenly cooked and touchable within five minutes.

Clean up with this bakeware is amazing! You can turn it inside out to clean the corners thoroughly and easily. It does not rust after washing it like metal bakeware and it does not dent. Storage of silicone bakeware is easy and the flexible material allows you to bend or fold to fit in your cabinets.

Disadvantages? Well honestly, the only disadvantage that I was able to find was certain silicone bakeware you need to make sure you place on a cooling rack that is larger than the pan you used. My first time using my brownie silicone bakeware I placed it on a trivet and cracked the top of the brownie. With the large assortment of silicone bakeware that I have purchased, that is the only disadvantage I have been able to find.

To conclude, I love the silicone bakeware and share the positive comments and uses that both professional and non-professional bakers share. These various shapes, colors, and sizes allow you to be creative and have fun in your own kitchen while saving money at the same time. The silicone pans will last much longer than the metal bakeware and in my opinion are safer for you and your family.
